[MARVEL] - THE UNTOLD LEGEND OF CAPTAIN MARVEL [ENG] (1997)

#CaptainMarvel

A three part mini series released in 1997, a year after the cancellation of the first Genis-Vell Captain Marvel title. This series was set before Marvel Super-Heroes #12 and chronicled Mar-Vell's missions before he was sent to Earth. Here we see his first encounters with the characters who would later go on to be some of Mar-Vell's most infamous enemies: Kree Officer Yon-Rogg, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard, and the Brood.

A long time ago on the Kree planet Tarsis is where the story begins. This story takes place before Silver Surfer's betrayal and before the events of Marvel Super Heroes #12. The Kree are locked in combat against Galactus and Silver Surfer for the very survival of the planet. Captain Mar-Vell and the rest of the Kree soldiers are order to retreat as their weapons can do nothing to stop the Devourer and his Herald. Mar-Vell and his crew barely escape with their lives and watch mournfully as the planet is consumed before their very eyes. Mar-Vell returns to Kree-Lar where he is placed aboard the imperial cruiser Pama, hand picked by the Supreme Intelligence for a top secret mission. It is aboard the Pama where Mar-Vell first meets Colonel Yon-Rogg, also hand picked specifically for this mission. The Situation: Grand Admiral Devros has gone missing. The Kree leaders received a distress signal from his ship in the Absolom Sector, the most dangerous sector in all Kree Space. If he is in enemy hands many of the empire's greatest secrets could be in danger of being exposed. Their mission: Find Grand Admiral Devros and silence him. En route they encounter a Shi'Ar Scoutcraft besieged by three Skrull Warsaucers. Captain Mar-Vell volunteers to lead a strike team in to aid the Shi'Ar. Once aboard the Shi'Ar vessel they encounter members of the Imperial Guard. The battle turns in favor of the Skrulls until Mar-Vell, in one final desperate attack, destroys the Skrull battery and repelling their main forces. The attack leaves him stunned and at the mercy of the Skrulls. The Skrull commander readies the final blow when Deathbird suddenly comes to Mar-Vell's aid, slaying the skrull!

Mar-Vell wakes up aboard the Pama, and after learning his squad successfully repelled the Skrulls, meets with the Shi’ar Imperial Guard. Rather suspiciously, Deathbird informs the Kree they entered the Absolom Sector in search of a Brood raider vessel and only encountered the Skrulls by coincidence. After she and her Imperial Guard leave, the crew of the Pama heads into the Absolom Sector, now more concerned about recovering Grand Admiral Devros than ever. They land on an unnamed planet, and after they find Devros’ ship crash-landed next to an Acanti vessel, the Brood, led by the infected Grand Admiral Devros, ambushes them. The defeated Kreemen wake up some time later in the Brood lair after the Brood Queen impregnates each of them with her eggs. Grand Admiral Devros explains his newfound affiliation with the Brood and announces his plans to infect the rest of the Kree in the galaxy. Enraged, Mar-Vell breaks free, executes the Brood Queen, and escapes with Una. It may be too late to save themselves, but they vow to put a stop to the Brood’s proliferation.

Mar-Vell and Una evade the Brood and sneak into the Pama, where they devise a plan to defeat the Brood and escape the planet intact. While Una works on a cure for their Brood embryo infections, Mar-Vell sets a time-bomb in the ship’s main power generator. He then advances to the engine room, where he encounters the Devros, the Brood King. During their fight, Mar-Vell’s bomb detonates and initiates a destructive chain reaction. Mar-Vell executes Devros and heads back to find Una. By the time he arrives, however, his inner Brood has overtaken him. Una neutralizes his Brood infection with a makeshift cure. They then jettison the ship’s med-lab into space, but not before Mar-Vell swoops back down the planet’s surface to rescue the stranded Colonel Yon-Rogg. After several weeks adrift, they are rescued by Deathbird and return to the Kree homeworld. Yon-Rogg takes all the credit for the successful mission and receives a promotion—as well as a new mission and accompanying crew. He takes Mar-Vell and Una with him on his next assignment, a mission to spy on the inhabitants of an obscure, backwater planet called Earth.
